Lazarus

The story of Lazarus is the last miracle performed by Jesus in the New Testament. However, it was a mix of the original story, as well as the James Tissot painting depicting the event, and the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds son Dig Lazarus Dig that piqued Danny’s interest. The painting is sketchy and expressive and in it Lazarus looks more like the undead than the resurrected. Nick Cave’s lyrics note that ‘Lazarus never asked to be raised from the tomb; nobody asked him to forsake his dreams’, implying an act of being woken up from the eternal rest without consent. Danny’s Lazarus hand both reaches for salvation and life, but at the same time seems like a hand not out of place in a Romero zombie movie, clawing its way out of the ground. The stone was sourced from Canterbury Cathedral and repurposed into this sculpture, giving the work another dimension of resurrection.
